We Cannot Save Or Keep Ourselves

Neither can we save or keep one another.

Jeremiah 17:5: Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. 7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

Jonah 2:9b: . . . Salvation is of the LORD.

Luke 19:10: For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

John 15:5: I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Jeremiah 13:23: Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

Job 14:4: Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

We cannot save ourselves and neither can we earn salvation. It is a gift. If we could earn it, salvation would not be a gift.

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We cannot earn salvation because we have already earned something else, we have already earned death and Hell. Our only chance at salvation is if someone else who is able to earn it earns it for us. Jesus did that. He lived a sinless life and had no sin of His own to pay for. He willingly accepted the wages of our sin when He died on that cross. He accepted what we deserve, death, so that He might give us what He deserves, eternal life.

Romans 5:8: But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon: Take heed that thou gloriest not in thy graces, but let all thy glorying and confidence be in Christ and His strength, for only so canst thou be kept from falling.

1 Peter 1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

While salvation is a free gift, it is a gift that changes us.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Romans 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Are you aware that God has done His powerful saving work on you and changed you? Can you communicate to yourself and others some things that He and He alone has changed about you?
